Mahamudra Ngondro Teaching - Mahamudra Ngondro Teaching 1. GENERATING BODHICITTA MIND Good afternoon everyone. I am very happy to see many students here to receive Ngondro teaching because Ngondro is extremely important in dharma practice. When we are learning dharma, the most importance is generating bodhicitta mind. All of you come here to learn Ngondro and the purpose should not be just for yourselves. We are here learning Ngondro to bring benefits to all the sentient beings. All sentient beings are like our mother. You can observe your mother in this life. How much she cares of us, how much she loves us, how much she concentrates on us. You should think this way: I wish to take the mother sentient beings to the enlightenment. That’s the reason I practise four ordinary foundations and four extraordinary foundations. Why do we need to generate bodhicitta mind? Because generating bodhicitta mind and without generating bodhicitta mind when we practise Dharma bringsdifferent result. I can give you an example: with bodhicitta mind, it is like lighting a candle in a dark room, the brightness can spread to the whole area. Without generating bodhicitta mind, it is like when you light up a candle covered by a cup, it only benefits a small area. Generating bodhicitta mind and without generating bodhicitta mind can make such difference. That’s the reason why generating bodhicitta mind is extremely important to whatever thing we do. When we do Dharma practice, when we do charity, whatever we do, if we can have bodhicitta mind, then everything is pure, everything is beneficial to ourselves and all sentient beings. Sonam Tenzin Rinpoche went from East to West Tibet to attend His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa’s enthronement ceremony at Tsurphu Monastery. During this time, Rinpoche had the privilege of personally meeting the Karmapa in as many as seven audiences, receiving numerous teachings, initiations, and instructions. Marpa Lotsawa, a Tibetan farmer, made 3 perilous trips to India to learn Dharma from his guru Naropa. The first Tibetan Kagyupa master, he is credited with the transmission to Tibet from India of many Vajrayana and Mahamudra teachings. Jetsun Milarepa, the greatest yogi of Tibet, despite having committed evil acts in his early years, attained enlightenment in one lifetime by practicing diligently and enduring much hardship, under his guru Marpa Lotsawa. Gampopa, the most important disciple of Milarepa, blended the doctrines of the Kadampas with his own realizations of Mahamudra, so producing the basis of the Kagyupa tenets. Dharma Wangchug, one of the 4 main disciples of Je Gampopa, founded the Barompa branch of the Kargyupa lineage. Rechungpa Dorje Drak (1083 – 1161), founded “Rechung Kagyu” and Gampopa founded “Dakpo Kagyu”, named after the region where he came from. As a native of the Dakpo region and a celebrated physician, he is also known as Dakpo Lhaje, the physician from Dakpo. His full name is Dakpo Dawo Shon-nu (1079 – 1153). He is the author of the Jewel Ornament of Liberation, and was largely responsible for really establishing the development of the Kagyu lineage in Tibet, the land of snows. Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa are also known as the “Kagyu Gongma Nam-nga” – the Five Founding Masters of the Kagyupa lineage. The aforementioned early Kagyu schools should not be confused with the schools that came later and became known as “the four great and eight lesser schools of the Kagyu tradition (Kagyu Cheshi Choong Gye)”. If we regard the four great and eight lesser schools as the only Kagyu schools, there is the danger of excluding Dakpo Kagyu. The Four Major Kagyu Schools: Barom Kagyu – Founded by Barom Darma Wangchuk (1100 – ) Phagdru Kagyu – Founded by Phagmo Drupa Dorje Gyalpo (1110 – 1170) Karma Kagyu – Founded by Dusum Khyenpa, Karmapa I (1110 – 1193) Tshalpa Kagyu – Founded by Zhang Tsondru Drakpa (1123 – 1193) The Eight Minor Kagyu Schools: Drikung Kagyu – Founded by Kyopa Jigten Gampa (1143 – 1212) Taglung Kagyu – Founded by Taglung Thangpa Tashi Palden (1142 – 1210) Trophu Kagyu – Founded by Drogon Gyaltsha (1118 – 1195) Lingre Kagyu – Founded by Lingre Pema Dorje (1128 – 1188) Martsang Kagyu – Founded by Choje Marpa Dondrup ( ) Yelpa Kagyu – Founded by Yelpa Yeshe Tsek ( ) Yazang Kagyu – Founded by Zarawa Yeshe Senge (1169 – 1207) Shugseb Kagyu – Founded by Nyephu Gyergom Chenpo The four great Kagyu schools (Kagyu Che – Shir) were founded by the four main main disciples of Gampopa, however Dakpo Kagyu maintained its own successive abbots which were successively separate from the abbatial lineages of the twelve schools. Hence there exist the above mentioned schools which do not fall into the 12 schools. The eight lesser Kagyu schools (Choong-Gye) were founded by the main disciples of Phagmo Drupa. Phagmo Drupa briefly ruled Tibet after overthrowing the Sakya rule. Phagmo Drupa studied 12 years with Sachen Kunga Nyingpo (1092 – 1158) and received Lamdre. He influenced the formation of the twelve sub-schools in that the Lamdre teachings of the Sakyapa were also included in the Gdams-ngag mdzod of the Kagyupa tradition. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6115d8f288c1445581151b1a/9be0351b-62fe-407d-83dc-2ae432686d53/BaromKagyu.jpg Barom Kagyu Lineage - Barom Darma Wangchug Barom Dharma Wangchug (1127 – 1199) was born in the area called Gawa Yulna in Penyul. The forefathers in his clan of Dakarwa were one of the seven Tibetans who first took monastic vows and some ministers of the early Tibetan dharma kings. His father was Donba Jungne Lodro and his mother Jomo Lochungma. They had three sons, among whom he was the middle one, named Bumgyab. At the age of seven, he took monastic ordination from the preceptor Bogawa Tarma and the instructor Wangchug Shonnu, receiving the name Dharma Wangchug. Thereafter, he studied the Kadampa teachings with the famous Trolungba Lodro Jungne (eleventh – twelfth century), the great disciple of Ngog Lotsawa (1059 – 1109), Geshe Botowa (1031? – 1105), and Geshe Jayulwa (1075 – 1138). At the age of twenty, encouraged by a yogin and out of devotion for Gampopa that had already developed in him before through merely having heard this master’s name, he went to Gampopa’s seat. During a ceremony of the tenth day of the month, he saw Gampopa directly as Vajradhara and stayed with him as his untiring attendant for six years. He received the entire transmission of the Kagyu lineage and realisation dawned in him simultaneously without difficulty. In particular, he trained in the practice of illusory body throughout day and night. Finally, in 1153, Gampopa told him to go to Barom and practice there, since it is a place blessed by many great masters, such as Marpa Lotsawa (1012 – 1097). However, Dharma Wangchug fervently requested Gampopa to allow him to stay with him until he would pass away. Gampopa said, “Barom, do so, if you please. Let’s stay together for another thirty-three days as father and son.” After these thirty-three days, Gampopa passed away. Although many, such as Gampopa’s nephew and disciple Gomtsul (1116 – 1169), advised him to stay at Gampo, he followed the words of Gampopa and went north to Barom. From 1154 onward, he stayed in solitary retreat there at Dza Telu Rinchenbung for seven years. He mostly sustained himself through the power of his meditative concentration. During these years, he sang twenty-nine cycles of great dohas, such as his supplication to the Kagyu gurus. Thereafter, he travelled to Kham and was supported by the great official Yeshe Sal. He stayed in Gyotu Tragar for three years where he instructed numberless disciples, with many geshes gathering around him. All in all, he went to Kham three times and founded the monasteries of Gotso and Lode. In 1176, he went on to Chipar Lhakang, where the sponsor Tartrawa offered him his sons, horses and so on. Dharma Wangchug placed his hands on the head of one of these young boys, who sat at the family’s nomad tent, and said, “I give you empowerment through OM AH HUM. You will become a siddhi who benefits sentient beings”. Later, the boy became his main disciple, Tishri Repa (1164 – 1236). Eventually, he returned to Barom and built a temple and a monastery there at one side of Red Rock. He displayed innumerable signs of having attained siddhis and gave dharma advice to many students. He also had a meeting with the founder of the Dalung Kagyu School, Dalung Tangpa Dashi Bal (1142 – 1210), who had arrived on a river nearby. In 1198, he met Jigden Sumgon (1143 – 1217), the founder of the Drikung School, as the latter was on his way to Namra. He received some instructions on bodhicitta and Mahamudra from Jigden Sumgon and, in return, payed perfect homage and service to him, such as offering his own disciples. Finally, at the age of seventy-two, he passed away by displaying many miraculous signs. In general, Baromba Dharma Wangchug guided many disciples through unifying the Mahamudra of the basic nature and the Mahamudra of bliss-emptiness in sutra and tantra. In this way, he became the founder of the Barom Kagyu lineage, whose teachings were widely propagated (mainly by Tishri Repa), thus becoming one of the four greater Kagyu lineages. Among his many disciples, the foremost were “the four great sons” such as Dsetrom Wangchug Senge, “the four close ones” such as Traga Lhadon, and “the five sons who held his lineage” such as Tishri Repa. The latter eventually became the guru of the then Chinese emperor (“tishri” means imperial preceptor) and demonstrated many miraculous feats at the court. He was followed – in both roles as the supreme head of the Barom lineage and the imperial guru – by Repa Garbo, who was even more accomplished than Tishri Repa. After him came Tsangsar Lume Dorje, who was enthroned by the then Central Tibetan king Chogyal Pagba as both the head of the Barom lineage and the local ruler of Tsangsar in the province of Nangchen in eastern Tibet. Both positions were continued by Jangchub Shonnu and his successors. The excellent Choejey Tenzin Phuntsok was born in the year 1461 and from a very young age he displayed all the natural signs of a highly noble being. From Lama Kyodrag Tenzin Sangpo, he received the complete teachings of Barom Kagyu tradition and having diligently meditated upon and practised it further, he gained profound realisation. The Seventh Karmapa, Chodrak Gyatso (1461-1536) gave him numerous teachings of enlightenment. The Seventh Karmapa also praised him as being on the holy stages of Bodhisattva and bestowed upon him the holy name of “Choejey Tenzin Phuntsok”. after receiving vows of the full ordination from Karmapa and leading a life completely dedicated to deeper meditation in solitary places of Chodrak his eminence reached very high stages of deep realisation. According to traditional folklore, in the year 1505, when he was 45, an eagle which was a manifestation of the wisdom Dakini Yeshe Khandro Sukhasiddhi, appeared to his Eminence and indicated the site for him to establish a Gonpa (Buddhist monastery). The eagle then proceeded to give some profound Dharma teachings and vowed to continuously offer protection and blessing to this sacred place. At that moment, many auspicious signs appeared. The Gonpa is now known as Chodrak Khangnay Gonpa Buddhist Monastery which has a thriving assembly of practicing monks and nuns. He quickly oversaw the revitalization and development of Chodrak Khangnay monastery. Khangnai Shedra University- institute of higher Buddhist studies: He established a new nunnery and proceeded to build a new Shedra (institute of higher studies of Buddhism) and other meditation facilities. Establishing a dharma realm comprising of over three hundred sanghas, the process of the bestowal of empowerments, imparting of teachings and pithy instruction was further activated. Whatever offerings were made to him either on behalf of the deceased or the living, Rinpoche put into good use by distributing them to the noble Sangha and using them to the good cause of rescuing animal lives. orphanage at Chodrak Monastery was founded by Khenpo Dam Cho Dawa Rinpoche, a senior teacher at Chodrak Monastery, in response to the growing numbers of young children who were orphaned or whose parents were unable to provide for them.. The majority of the people of Kham province are traditionally farmers and nomads. Farmers were able to grow enough food to feed their families and a little more that could be traded for necessities such as tea. Nomads grazed yaks, sheep and goats, and raised horses that could also be traded. Most of the farmers and nomads don’t earn a cash income; rather they exchange goods as needed. The land reforms introduced by the government over the last forty years, greatly restricting grazing areas, has had a very adverse effect on the Khampas’ ability to maintain their lifestyle. The problems created by the harsh conditions in Eastern Tibet, which had historically contributed to an early mortality rate, have been compounded by government policies such as resettlement and the change from a barter to cash economy. Even those who have a chance to earn a cash income have great difficulty paying for necessities such as medical fees and often forego medical treatment for lack of money. Khenpo Dam Cho Dawa built Chodrak orphanage to provide food, accommodation and an education for children who would otherwise be forced to beg for survival in a poor and remote part of Tibet. Since its inception, the orphanage has continued to grow in numbers and now cares for around 100 children ranging in age from 5 to 16 years. In addition to providing for the children’s basic needs for food, clothing and shelter, it also provides the opportunity to escape the cycle of poverty by providing them with a sound education whilst maintaining their Tibetan culture. The language for what education is available under the communist basic education system is Chinese. Recognising that the language that best preserves the cultural and religious heritage of the people of Kham is Tibetan, Khenpo has ensured the children’s cultural heritage is maintained through the curriculum taught at the orphanage. The children study Tibetan and Chinese language, maths, art and traditional Tibetan folk dance and music. The orphanage has five members of staff, including teachers, who provide for all the children’s needs. In addition to his responsibilities as a senior teacher at Chodrak Monastery, Khenpo Dam Cho Dawa Rinpoche provides all financial requirements for the children and orphanage through his teaching activities. Rinpoche regularly undertakes teaching tours throughout regional China to raise funds to support his charitable endeavours, and has taught Buddhist Philosophy at the University of Beijing for the past seven years. Khenpo Dan Cho Dawa is also the abbot of Yushu Tibetan Buddhist Philosophy College, a school for monks and tulkus in Jyukendo, Qinghai, which is four hours’ drive away from the orphanage. Any money given to Khenpo from students is given to the orphanage, to cover the costs of the children’s health and education, and to improve the rudimentary conditions of the orphanage. Khenpo Dam Cho Dawa has entrusted Venerable Sonam Tenzin Rinpoche to act on his behalf in Australia, in order to support his compassionate activities. Dr. Tse Ten Wangmo was born in 1971 in Kham – Tibet, Tse Ten Wangmo decided to dedicate her whole life for dharma practice and helping other like his father did. Her father Dr. Kazang Gelek, uncle of Venerable Sonam Tenzin Rinpoche, while living was very famous for his loving kindness and compassion with ability to help people curing sickness and disease in areas. It was told that when someone is in need, he will immediately coming, sometimes it was at middle of the night people came to his house knocking door and ask for help of their relatives, he took the bag and go with them to the patience home no matter how far it is and normally it took him many hours riding horse under cold night with strong wind. After that he rushing back and reach home when the sun rise together with long line of many people waiting for him to check up. Don’t let patience wait, he immediately do the checking up, giving treatment one by one until no one there and when finish the sun already set with nothing in his stomach as he had no time for breakfast and lunch. Yet, his compassionate toward patience is very unique and rare as many times he himself, by mouth testing the urine of patience to find out exactly the symptom of disease….He had done so much things for people without receiving back any compensation. Unfortunately, in 1999 being hit by a stroke of high blood pressure He had gone far way! but with his Bodisattva attitude and great kind-heart, huge number of people in area were cured by Dr.Kazang. He is no more living with us but her beloved daughter Ani Tse Ten Wangmo is the one who he gave all his teaching and knowledge and experience. She had been following him for more than 10 years to study medicine and practice treatment, with the strong aspiration to help others she study very hard, working intensely and tirelessly but very humble, she deserves to be his ancestral, a qualified doctor of Chodrak Nunnery.
